The Second Peony Painting of 2011

Here are some process photos of the second peony painting of 2011, begun just days after the first. I don't usually show my process, but thought that it would be fun to share it with this painting as it was so well documented throughout each stage. I work through each painting in a slightly different way, but there is some basic regularity with which one could expect to find from one piece to another. Here it is, the second peony painting:

I start off by spending a long time on the still life setup and composition. I sometimes spend hours trying out different configurations and compositions before settling on the one I will paint. Once I have settled on a comp, I will brush on a thin wash of oil paint, usually an earth tone. Here, I used Cadmium Brown for the initial wash.

I drew out the forms in the same pigment as the first tone and decided that in order to see the composition better, I would begin placing thinned local color in the flowers.

After putting the local color in, I decided that I wanted to back out the composition a little to allow more space around the flower arrangement, so I took the painting down to a wash, drew it again and added color again.

I have begun adding darks, local color and the very first opaque lights.

This picture shows my continuing development of the dark areas and the addition of more light in the flowers. Definition is found through the slow refinement of both lights and darks.

At this point most of the main elements have been added and the piece is starting to come into focus. The red peony on the left has been worked to near completion and I am beginning to concentrate on the pink peony on the right.

End of Day One - a very long day of painting. When I paint flowers, I have so much uncertainty as to what the flowers will look like the next morning that I am compelled to work as late into the night as I possibly can, sometimes working 16+ hours in a row. I paint in a more direct manner with flowers than with other types of still life paintings, and try to capture each flower individually so that if it is completely different the next day, I will not have lost it.

Day 2

I could not come back to this piece for 48 hours, and when I did, several flowers had wilted and others had bloomed from buds to blossoms. I was fortunate that I painted the ones I did paint on day 1 because both the large red flower on the left and the pink flower on the right were sadly wilted 2 days later. Here is the work I did on the second day of painting:

Here I have worked extensively into the central pink peony, giving it light, definition, and bodied paint.

Here I have added light, color and body to the bud opening up on the top left. After that I worked into the central bud, giving it the details and color that it deserved. Small refinements near the end of a painting take much longer for me than the initial broad strokes of the paintings beginning. This is the end of day 2, I could do no more that day, and left the studio exhausted.

Day 3 - The Finish!

On the last day, I worked into the table and vase more thoroughly, adding body where it was wanted and refining many small elements of the piece.

2011 Spring Flowers = Spring Paintings

This year the spring blooming peonies really captured my attention and I found that there was just no way to forget them, so I painted them! Like an addict, the first time I painted these beauties only made my craving to capture them in paint grow stronger. I am quite sure that if I had had more peonies, there would be more peony paintings, but as it is now summer, I will have to wait till next year. Here is the first peony painting of 2011, and a few process photos taken in my studio:

My First Peony Painting

This is a photo from early in the painting process. I have done an initial drawing in thinned earth tones on a wet toned canvas and have just applied a second layer of paint with body, light and color.

This is a photo showing some of how a painting, done from life such as this one, progresses. The large bud on the right has been pretty well defined and all other flowers have an earlier stage of development in the painting.

Here you can see the flower in the middle is almost finished whereas the buds on the top and left are still at a more rudimentary stage.

A photo of me painting, closer to the finish. I have a reproduction of a painting by Henri Fantin-Latour on my easel for added inspiration, as he is one of my favorite floral painters of all time. He could express the way a petal feels, the intrinsic character of a leaf, the gentle quietude of a shadow with paint in such a way, it could bring tears to my eyes.

Here is the painting on my easel with the flower still life in the background. I really loved the unique cool toned red of these particular peonies, and thought a simple background of white cloth and a white glass dish would be perfect for displaying their gentle color variations.

Artists Magazine 28th Annual Art Competition Awards

I have just received word that three works of mine have been selected as finalists in The Artist's Magazine's 28th Annual Art Competition! The full list of award winners and works honored by the magazine for this year's competition have not been published yet, but all will be revealed and featured in the December 2011 issue of the magazine. I am happy to have my works among those honored in this competition and am fortunate to have been recognized in several different categories of the competition including: the Portraits/Figures category, the Still Life/Floral category, and the Landscape/Interiors category. I will post further information closer to that date, but briefly, the three works of mine that have been chosen for this honor are:

Crocker Art Auction 2011

Every year the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California holds an art auction to help support the wonderful exhibitions and educational programs that it offers to the public. I am proud to announce that this year I have three never before shown paintings juried into the California Art Club's 100th Annual Gold Medal Exhibition. The exhibition will be on display from April 3rd to 24th at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. The Centennial anniversary exhibition should be one of their best yet!

The opening night Gala Reception is tonight, tickets are $100 at the door, and many artists will be there to meet attendees. This year my husband and I will not be present at the opening, but there are many wonderful artists who will be in attendence there tonight. The California Art Club will mark its Centennial anniversary by presenting the 100th occurrence of its hallmark annual exhibition – the "100th Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition" – at the Pasadena Museum of California Art from April 3 to 24, 2011.

The exhibition will coincide with the publication of "California Light: A Century of Landscapes – Paintings of the California Art Club." The 276-page deluxe book from Skira Rizzoli will feature 300 lush California landscape paintings created over the past 100-years by artist members of the Club and document the organization’s history from its founding in 1909 at an artist’s studio in the Arroyo Seco Canyon to its current activities that involve six chapters throughout the state.

This year’s event will showcase nearly 200 representational works of art, spotlighting sculpture as well as paintings of genres ranging from pristine landscapes and seascapes to figures and still life. In celebration of the Gold Medal’s 100th anniversary and the release of "California Light," the exhibition will also feature approximately 60 miniature paintings and sculpture that focus on a visual journey through the Golden State.

The more than 150 participating artists include nationally renowned artists Peter Adams, Belá Bácsi, Peter Brooke, Scott Burdick, Scott Christensen, John Cosby, Dennis Doheny, David C. Gallup, Nancy Guzik, Steve Huston, David Leffel, Jeremy Lipking, Kevin Macpherson, Joseph Paquet, Mian Situ, Richard Schmid, Christopher Slatoff, Tim Solliday, Alexey Steele, Zhiwei Tu and Jove Wang.

“For more than 100 years, the California Art Club has been the standard bearer of great traditional art and so it is this year. The 100th Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition exemplifies the very best in traditional American art,” said Jean Stern, Executive Director of The Irvine Museum.

Stern was one of five California museum scholars on the jury that selected the artwork for inclusion in the exhibition. He was joined by Catherine Hess, Chief Curator of European Art, The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens; Peter Keller, Ph.D., President, The Bowers Museum of Cultural Art; Jenkins Shannon, Executive Director, Pasadena Museum of California Art; and Scott A. Shields, Ph.D., Associate Director and Chief Curator, Crocker Art Museum.

During the evening before the exhibition opens to the public, the Club will host the Artists’ Gala Reception. Tickets for the April 2 preview event, at which Best of Show honors and other awards will be announced, are $75 in advance and $100 at the door. Included in the price of admission is a copy of the full-color exhibition catalogue.

Because an important component of the organization’s mission is to educate on the merits of traditional fine art, the Club will offer three educational programs during the Gold Medal Exhibition.

On the exhibit’s opening day from 2 to 3:30 p.m., the Club will present “Great Expectations: A PowerPoint Presentation and Live Lecture by Richard Schmid.” Schmid will discuss the journey through the possibilities of painting from life. Tickets for the lecture, which will be held at the Blinn House, located a block north of the museum, are $25 for Club members and $30 for non-members. Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the educational programs of the California Art Club.

The other two programs will be held in the museum gallery among the Gold Medal artwork. On Sunday, April 10, from 1 to 3 p.m., Jean Stern, who also co-authored California Light, will speak on “100 Years of California Art.” On Thursday, April 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Club will present the “Closing Tour with the Artists,” during which exhibiting artists will lead tours and share insights on the creation of the artwork in the display. Both of these events are free with museum admission.

2011 a busy year!!

2011 is shaping up to be another very busy year! My artwork is scheduled to exhibit in several shows over the next few months and I will have a magazine article coming out later this year. With works in all different stages of completion piling up in my studio, I will be busy for months to come.

"Reason" to show at the Fairhaven Mausoleum Art Exhibition 2010

My recent bronze sculpture "Reason" has been juried into the Fairhaven Mausoleum Art Exhibition 2010, and has also been given the honor of being used as the advertisement for this years show. This unique exhibition is held for just one weekend a year and is located within a beautiful 100 year old mausoleum in Santa Ana, CA. This is the 5th annual exhibition at Fairhaven Mausoleum, and the artist participants are all alumni and graduate students of Laguna College of Art and Design. My husband and I anticipate being in town for the opening night and will be attending the show. The show is open to all and I encourage anyone who might be in the LA area to come by. It is stunning in the day when the light is filtered through the stained glass windows, and breathtaking at night when the candelabras are all lit.

"Dementia" and "Downpour" Head to South Carolina

I just brought "Downpour" back from the framers, and it looks stunning. This past weekend, I built my largest crate to date in order to safely transport both "Dementia" and "Downpour" to Charleston, South Carolina for the Women Painting Women show. Even though I know my way around the wood shop, and build all of my own panels and stretchers for paintings, this was a large undertaking for me. I am proud to say that my crate design and measurements worked out beautifully - (yes I am gloating a bit) - and the paintings are now safely on their way!

The following are some photographs showing how to make a crate to ship paintings:

"Downpour" framed and ready for wrapping.
Each painting gets a layer of foam on the corners, bubble wrap, stretch wrap, plastic wrap and a cardboard cover for the face before being placed in the crate for shipping.

Here, I am making the first of the large side walls of the crate. The paintings are large, so the crate needed to be substantially built. I chose 2"x3" lumber for the framing, and 1/4" plywood for the walls. Each corner needs to be clamped at a right angle and pre-drilled before screwing together to avoid splitting the wood or building a wall that isn't perfectly square. Once I built the frame, I screwed the plywood on top.

This is after both side walls are completed.

Here I am building the end pieces. After that I build the panels for the top and bottom.

This is the crate half assembled. Because the completed and filled crate will weigh more than 200 lbs I have added 4"x4" skis to the bottom so that the crate can be fork lifted with ease.

Here you can see that I have added Styrene (a stiff padding substance often used for packing electronics) to each wall for protection to the paintings during transit. The walls have 1" thick styrene, the floor has 2" styrene, and between the wrapped paintings there will be and additional layer of 1" styrene.

Finished at last!

Crate ready for pickup. Each wall is screwed into place except the end piece I am leaning on. That wall has carriage bolts and wing nuts, and is the access point for the paintings. Once the carriage bolts are removed, the end panel is easily pulled out and the paintings are accessible.

Bohannon to show in Women Painting Women Exhibition

Women Painting Women

In March of 2009, a group of female artists formed a blog with a unique and simple focus, contemporary women artists painting women. The endeavor, a genuine exploration of the female perspective without political or social commentary, resulted in a stunning collection of living artists and a new window into the female psyche. There are so many differences between the way a man chooses to paint a woman, and the way a woman chooses to paint a woman. The long history of male artist's paintings of women are a treasured part of my artistic knowledge, and no art history book could be filled without them. In these paintings, I often found the communication of strength, tenderness, aggression, admiration, power, love and lust. A testimony to thousands of years of relations between man and woman. The paintings of women by women when seen collectively are a startlingly different perspective. I believe these paintings often share an emotionally colored lens of the female self. In portraits, there is a glimmer of recognition in the eyes. In most of the nudes, the form is not an object of desire or admiration, but a bearing of the soul for all to see. The viewer is often watched by the subject in the painting, rather than viewing a coy or unknowing subject. There is so much within these works to draw conclusion from, it would be a disservice to ignore their rich content.

I have enjoyed visiting this blog for many months now, and am thrilled to tell you that there is now a show being organized to bring a collection of this work to the public. The first Women Painting Women show is to be held in the Robert Lange Studios gallery in Charleston, South Carolina from November 5- November 30th. I am very pleased and greatly honored to be showing alongside many talented female artists in this show. Next week I will be building a massive crate to send both "Downpour" and "Dementia" cross country to be hung in the WPW exhibition. Several local and national art magazines have already informed us that they are covering the show, among them: American Art Collector, and Southwest Art Magazine, Art Mag, Skirt Magazine, Charlie Magazine, The City Paper, and The Scene. Wow! What an event, this one shouldn't be missed!

"Downpour"
Downpour is a portrayal of physically daunting elements representing the burden of an overwhelmed mind. The gesture itself is uniquely feminine; she battles the oppression of this burden by turning inward.

"Dementia"
When I first met Edith, she was already deeply affected by dementia and Alzheimer's disease. In her, I saw something reminiscent of a person I loved and lost in a similar way. Dementia is a depiction of one of the greatest tragedies of my life; losing someone I loved as their mind withered away prior to their body. It is the most terrifying subject I have ever painted about. To lose someone before they are physically gone, to watch the suffering of a person trapped inside an unwilling and unresponsive body... it is devastating. This subject was so important to me that I was compelled to express it in a work of art. I think that it is something that could be very important to others as well, as many people are privately coping with this commonly shared experience. I could not bear to paint the person that I lost, and only found the courage to take on this endeavor when I met Edith Mueller. The woman I painted physically resided in a beautiful city, yet lived in a prison of the mind, and inhospitable terrain where nothing was recognizable anymore. She lived surrounded by people, yet trapped in solitude. This barren landscape of her mind is where I have painted her.

“This is our most ambitious show to date,” says gallery owner Megan Lange of the galleries upcoming “Women Painting Women” group invitational. Robert Lange Studios will be bringing together fifty female painters from around the globe, with an opening reception on Friday, November 5 from 5:30-8:30PM at the

2 Queen Street

location during the Charleston Fine Art Dealers’ Association’s (CFADA) Fine Art Weekend.

The femal form is one of the most painted subject matters of all time. Works like Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, Whistler’s Mother, Mona Lisa, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Madame X, are all considered among the most recognized paintings in history, and were all created by men.

The November exhibit at RLS, featuring a variety of paintings depicting the female form, displays a shift in notoriety towards contemporary women painters. Starting in 1707, this historic shift began in the United Sates when Henrietta Johnston began to work as a portrait artist in Charles Town (now Charleston), South Carolina, making her the first known professional woman artist in America.

“Few people outside of the art world can name female painters, with the exception of perhaps Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe, and even fewer can name a painting of a women created by a women,” says Lange. “However, there is a sensitivity to the female form that perhaps a women can only truly understand.”

The artists chosen for this show are the ones that refuse to play it safe. Each painter has created one or two original works for the show. Ali Cavanaugh's striking frescos show a woman with striped socks on her arms. Her face is hidden, presumably because of her shyness. Mia Bergeron provides impressionist portraits that pack a lot of emotion into their small frames.

Another example, Swedish painter Sanna Tomac’s “Invisible Bond” is a 35" x 25" work in oil and depicts a woman wearing a shall with a swan and a tiny fox tucked within it’s safety. This is symbolic of a woman’s nurturing nature.

The group show is part of the CFADA Fine Art weekend, with events including exhibits on Friday, plein air demonstrations in Washington Park during the day on Saturday with the Charleston Art Auction to follow Saturday night. Many of the artists will be painting in the park for charity on Saturday.

CFADA is a non-profit organization and the Fine Art Weekend is designed to raise money for art programs for local schools. For eleven years the organization has been donating money and this year CFADA’s goal is to hit $200,000 in cumulative donations.

Oil Painters Of America Western Regional Exhibition

    I am excited to announce that my oil painting "Cardoons" (seen above) has been juried into this year's Oil Painters of America Western Regional Exhibition at Mountain Trails Gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The "Oil Painters of America" organization openly states their dedication to "preserving and promoting excellence in representational art... advancing the cause of traditional, representational fine art by drawing attention to the lasting value of fine drawing, color, composition and the appreciation of light."   They promote this agenda through their yearly exhibitions, workshops, website and by giving awards.
The Western Regional exhibition is one of their 3 largest juried exhibitions each year and is a means for displaying some of the finest work being produced in the western United States, Canada and Mexico.  The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday evening, October 9th from 4-8pm with a warm reception and awards ceremony. The show continues from October 9th - November 10th 2010
   It is my first time showing with the Oil Painters of America, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to show my work in this new venue.  The work was carefully packed and shipped earlier this week and should be arriving in Jackson Hole, Wyoming very soon!

   The Mountain Trails Gallery is a well known gallery in the west, utilizing a spacious 6,500 sq ft gallery to show an ecclectic mix of contemporary, figurative and western artworks. Oil Painters Of America Western Regional Exhibition

    Through our national and regional shows, educational programs, scholarships and marketing efforts, OPA has become a leader in the art community and a driving force in the new Renaissance.
    This year’s Western Regional Exhibition & Sale is being held at the beautiful Mountain Trails Gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming beginning Saturday, October 9 through Wednesday, November 10, 2010.
    The paintings being exhibited in this year’s regional show have been selected from hundreds of entries and represent some of the finest work being produced in the western half of the United States, Mexico and Canada. “Every show just keeps getting better and better. I find myself more and more impressed with the work being submitted and am proud to be part of such a wonderful organization,” said executive director Kathryn Beligratis. All paintings will be for sale during the exhibition.
    The opening reception will be held on Saturday evening, October 9th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All those interested in fine art are welcome to attend. The awards presentation will take place at approximately 6:00 p.m. at which time Mr. Handell will announce the Gold Medal winners in the Associate/Signature and Master Signature Divisions, as well as the Silver and Bronze Medal.

Sculpture on display at the California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition 2010

This year I was pleased to show a sculpture at the 99th annual California Art Club's Gold Medal Exhibition. The show took place in the prestigious Pasadena Museum of California Art from June 13th-July3rd. It is my first time showing a sculpture since graduating from art college, and I look forward to creating more works of sculpture in the near future.

It has been a while since I posted new works here, but not for lack of work to share. I have been hard at work in the studio. Between the late nights, early mornings and the general mayhem surrounding my dog having a litter of puppies, I have had little energy to put into sharing! Here are a few pictures of new works. I have painted several of the spring birds that grace the nearby trees since we moved to this secluded forest home. Their proud, boisterous chirps and banter have entertained me for weeks at a time. There is always a flux of fresh life and recent death here, so in ballance with this ebb and flow, I painted the little dead bird I found one morning. Though I go out walking in the woodlands often, it is rare for me to come accross a recent carcass like this. The forest teems with creatures that dine on such fare, and I just happened to be the quickest scavenger that day.

This is another little oil painting from life, a self portrait I started on my birthday. Candice at 28. Not a great photo of the painting, some of the colors have gone "dead" while the painting continues to fully dry (6 months) and it would benefit greatly from a final varnish. When I do eventually varnish it, the colors will come back to life and I will re-photograph it and put it up on the website.

Here is a sweet little sentiment, a reminder of the flowers my husband gave me on our recent anniversary.

I call this The Sunshine Painting. It breathed onto the panel, pure bliss to paint. I was inspired by the idea of Van Gogh's yellow on yellow sunflower paintings, and thinking of a dear friend who loves the color orange. "Dementia" wins Best of Show at Roseville Arts 33rd Annual Open Exhibition

   Opening night for the Roseville Arts Blue Line Gallery 33rd Annual Open Exhibition was a full house. The show consists of a variety of works by artists from 8 different states ranging from figurative oil paintings and drawings to photography to abstract sculptures. These 62 works of art were chosen by Shelly Willis, director of Sacramento city and county Art in Public Places Program.
   When it was time for the "Best of Show" award to be handed out, there was a hushed silence as Shelly Willis described to the audience how tough a decision this was for her, because she couldn't decide between two stunning pieces. The two pieces she was having a hard time picking from were "Dementia" and "Despair of a Ravaged Mind", both works of mine. She settled for giving the award out to "Dementia" but said to the audience that it really was for both. A large round of applause followed and I was handed the prize money of $1,000.00. She later told me that she was unprepared to be confronted with this sort of work when she accepted the job of jurying the show. That despite all of her art's education and background she was simply bowled over by the caliber of skill and the heavy hitting content in these works. Several other participants and attendees of the show came up to speak to me personally about how touched they were by theses pieces, and that they have seen elderly family members go through similar agony in Alzheimer's Disease and the effects of dementia.
   This is the true reward for me, to know that these pieces have spoken loudly and have touched others. That they have interacted with viewers and found a home in their hearts. It is the reason I paint, to express and impress upon others that which I feel is important and necessary to share. I do not paint for prize money, thought it does help keep the electricity running in my studio, and therefor is important too. It is the experience of seeing my works interact with others that gives me all the energy I need to get back to work in the studio.

33rd annual Roseville Arts Open Exhibition well worth the drive

Candice Bohannon's "Dementia" offers a compelling portrait of a woman whose mind is unraveling. Wandering alone in a red-orange field, she gazes into the distance with a vacant stare. A wandering waterway leading to a marshland draws your eye into the dark distance on an ominously overcast day. Though she is bundled against the cold, you sense the frozen inner loneliness of the woman and her struggle to comprehend a world that suddenly seems strange.

Bohannon's moving oil painting on panel won the $1,000 Best of Show Award in the 33rd annual Roseville Arts Open Exhibition, which drew 655 entries from 17 states across the country. Though it stands out from the rest of the works in the show by virtue of its serious subject and accomplished technique, it had strong competition from works by Omar Thor Arason and John Tarahteeff, who both had impressive shows in Sacramento last year and also won prizes in this competition.

Arason's oil, "Freudian Riddle I," and Tarahteeff's acrylic, "Tending the Embers," were familiar to this viewer and thus lacked the element of surprise, but they came off as strong contenders for the top prize, as did Bohannon's pencil drawing, "Despair of a Ravaged Mind," which has the gravitas of a Kathe Kollwitz graphic. Arason's explosive montage of surreal images and Tarahteeff's enigmatic narrative set in a dreamlike seascape were among the most startling images in what is a curiously conservative show.

Juror Shelly Willis, director of the city and county Art in Public Places Program, selected 62 pieces of artwork from California, Georgia, Kentucky, Montana, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio andTexas for the show, which is long on two-dimensional, representational imagery but short on abstraction and three-dimensional pieces. There is nothing in the way of installation, which seems unusual for a juror who specializes in site- specific public work, and little that could be called conceptual.

Most of the works in the show are personal, and several, including David Mooney's acrylic, "St. Magnus Cathedral," tend toward the picturesque. That gives an almost 19th century feeling to portions of the exhibition, offset by some cartoonlike works, such as Steve Kellison's mixed-media "Yin Yang Pop," that seem to partake of the current craze for Japanese anime. Mooney and Kellison also won awards in the show.

If I'd judged the show, Bohannon's drawing would have won the top award and Jennifer Tancreto's haunting small assemblage of bones and specimen pins would have been included among the prize winners. But that's what makes horse races and juried art shows.

Within the parameters of Willis' taste, she did a good job of including a wide range of responses that move from streetwise caricatures by an artist with the single name Juice to a wonderfully well-observed portrait drawing of a young woman named Emmy by Barry Focha.

In addition to Focha's charcoal drawing, there are two strong works on paper – a pastel of an elegant equestrienne and a charcoal of a mother and daughter – by Julio Reyes. I also appreciated Amelia Currier's evocative solar print "Slieve League"; Gail Parker's combination drawing-painting 'Morning Plans"; Bora Choi's small intaglio print of a child sucking her thumb titled "Ai"; and Donald Ackles' "Work in Progress," a finely realized watercolor-and-ink study of a studio drawing table.

Of the three-dimensional work, the most ambitious is Dewane Hughes' colorful, large-scale mixed media piece "Tugging at My Heart Like Sisyphus Rolling His Stone." But I also liked Lee Kavaljian's small ceramic house with a curved exterior and Moorish-influenced window grilles and Bar Shacterman's imaginative ceramic sculpture of a doll-like guardian figure titled "Gate Keeper."

There were a number of fine photographs in the show, especially James Hirschinger's images of a cupboard and claw-foot bathtubs at the historic Preston Castle in Ione, a former juvenile penal institution; Dan Polaske's shot of a German holocaust memorial in Berlin; and Matthew Derezinski's poetic archival digital print "Once Upon a Time."

While this may not be the most forward-looking show I've seen, it's worth a trip to Roseville.

Conference in Davis

The John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis will present a conference and series of exhibitions called Artof Painting in the 21st Century. Among the distinguished speakers taking part are the eminent New York painter Philip Pearlstein, Bay Area artist Deborah Oropallo, Berkeley art historian Peter Selz, and University of California, Davis, art professor David Hollowell.

Roseville Arts 33rd Annual Open Show - Opening Ceremony Tonight!

Two works of mine have been juried into the Roseville Arts 33rd Annual Open Show, held at the Blue Line Gallery in Roseville, California. This is a nationwide juried exhibition open to the public Feb 20th - April 9th 2010. This year's juror is Shelley Willis, Public Art Administrator, Sacramento, California. The pieces of mine in the show are from a series of works I created surrounding the feelings and emotions tied to a woman named Edith Mueller and the Alzheimer's disease and dementia that plagued her last years. California Art Club Mentor Membership

    The California Art Club, established in 1909, is a group promoting traditional fine arts in the fields of painting, drawing and sculpture. It is a prestigious club, widely known for it's yearly Gold Medal Exhibition, concidered to be one of the countries premier exhibitions of contemporary-traditional fine art.
    I have been a juried Mentor Member of the California Art Club since 2006, however at that time I only applied to be juried for painting. A Mentor Membership is the membership status given to artists under the age of 30 whose work is judged to be of a high caliber and worthy of the California Art Club. It always weighed on me that I did not submit sculpture to the club for jurying, and so at last, I applied for sculpture membership in late 2009. I received notifications this past week that my portfolio of sculptural work has been viewed by the jury and that I am now an accepted Mentor Member in sculpture as well.
The reason why this membership is important to me at this time is that I desire the opportunity to show my sculptures in the yearly Gold Medal Exhibitions along with my paintings. I have not shown sculpture in a long time and do not want to continue neglecting that part of my artistic self. Last year I showed an oil painting titled "Cardoons" in the 98th Gold Medal Exhibition, and found the event to be a desirable venue for my work.   This year I have submitted both paintings and sculptures to the 99th Gold Medal Exhibition (June 13th - July 4th 2010) and I await word as to the results of the jury.
I will of course keep you informed as to those results when I receive them.

Sculpture Completed and Mold Finished

I am very excited about the portrait bust I just completed in clay. Though it is tempting to show you the finished piece, I will hold off till it is cast in bronze or plaster, so you will see it in the state it is meant to be shown. For now, I will share only a little technical information.

I sculpt in water based clay on a wooden armature stand. The first day of work on a new sculpture is to build the wooden armature that will hold up the weight of the clay as I apply it. The first day with my model, much of the day is spent choosing the exact pose I would like to sculpt. Once the pose is right, I add clay to the armature at a fierce pace - massing out the head and locating the major features. Each day I must take care to keep the clay moisture at the right level, if the clay gets too wet it could slide off the armature, too dry and it becomes hard and cracks apart. The days go by, and with my model in front of me, I measure and add and refine. The further along the sculpture is, the slower my pace. Much time is spent looking at my model. I try to know the truth of her face so well that I can immediately tell if my sculpture is not quite right.

When I am finished working on the clay sculpt, I must mold the clay in order to reproduce the sculpture. This process will destroy the original clay sculpture, but the mold that is made will make it possible to reproduce the sculpture dozens of times in a variety of materials from plaster to bronze. It is very important to make a sound mold for any mistakes could mean that the sculpture is destroyed with with no way to reproduce it.

The first step in making my mold is to mix up a batch of liquid rubber and gently apply it to my sculpture, taking care that it finds its way into all the deep cuts and crevasses of the clay without forming air bubbles. This is the most important layer of rubber, as it captures the texture and detail of the surface and seals it safely from the effects of moisture loss. (See the photograph below)

After this layer dries, as second coat of rubber is applied, reinforcing the first. This second layer is photographed below:

After the second layer dries thoroughly, I mix a thickening agent into my liquid rubber and apply a third and a fourth layer to the piece, concentrating on creating an even thickness of about half an inch. I then apply a fifth layer of rubber to create a thick line around the sculpture where I will later cut the rubber mold apart. (See the photograph below)

The next layer is to thicken the rubber shell even more, especially at the cut line and deep recesses. This is mainly to ensure that when I put the hard shell over this, that it will not lock onto the sculpture due to too many undercuts - thereby making it impossible to make any reproductions of the sculpture. (See the photograph below)

Now the rubber application is finished and I must build a hard shell to encase the pliable rubber. This is done so that the rubber does not warp into a different position. I used a plastic paste for the shell on this sculpture because it would dry hard and yet be lightweight. I chose to create the hard shell in three parts, one large piece in the front and two in the back. In order to ensure that the hard shell would be easily removable and yet will lock together with ease, I created a wall of clay around the sculpture with an indentation in it that will help with registration. (See the photographs below)

Once the clay wall is complete, I brush a release agent over the entire surface and begin to mix the plastic paste. The plastic paste has a very short working life, so it is important that I apply it quickly or it will dry in the mixing container. (See the plastic shell photographed below)

This process is repeated with the two sections in the back, and it is allowed to cure for 48 hours. I then carefully remove the plastic shell and cut through the rubber along the thickened lines. I peel the rubber off of the clay and at last, it is done. (See the inside of the rubber mold sitting in it's plastic shell in the photograph below)

Now I can put the sections back together, tie it securely, and pour a plaster into the cavity to create a perfect reproduction of the original!

"Dementia" Wins 1st Place at Fairhaven Mausoleum Art Exhibition

At the recent show "Fairhaven Mausoleum Art Exhibition 2009" (November 12-15) in Santa Ana, CA - my oil painting "Dementia" won 1st Place. Though I could not attend the show, I was very honored by this award and completely surprised! This show has grown considerably over the past three years, the work was very strong, and the jurors were incredible. The show was juried by three art connoisseurs:

Fresh Paint

I have been working long hours on a series of large paintings for several weeks in a row. When I work on larger works in secession like this, there builds inside me a tension, an anxiety that must be dissolved. I akin working on these involved paintings to walking a long tightrope, a constant balancing act between perceived success and perceived failure, pure joy and utter despair, sometimes within hours of each other. If this feeling becomes too strong, overwhelming my senses, I will create something smaller and less involved. This is a recent example of such a piece.

Southwest Art Magazine has featured Candice Bohannon in the August 2009 issue as the editors' choice for up-and-coming talent. Along with color reproductions of "Cardoons" and "Marie Masson" the magazine has published a particularly astute article about Bohannon and her work. Candice Bohannon drove past a patch of wildflowers called cardoons for years before she decided to paint them. At first, she recalls, she was content to merely grab the prickly plants from the side of the road and bring them home. “I came back home with a lot of wounds because they are very thorny,” Bohannan says with a laugh. Not long ago, however, the cardoons seemed particularly stunning. And she knew the area was soon to be cleared for a new roadway. It would be their last season. It was time to capture them on canvas. “I love how weeds can sometimes be very beautiful. Cardoons grow wild everywhere in Southern California with very little water and nurturing,” she says. “They are so forceful and willful.” Bohannon not only talks about the wildflowers as if they have human characteristics, she paints them that way, too. Anyone who saw her painting in the California Art Club’s Gold Medal Show recently might have observed that the spiny weeds did, in fact, convey a human-like energy, almost as if they could walk off the canvas and onto the floor of the museum. At 27, Bohannon was one of the youngest artists featured in the juried show. Already an award-winning painter, she most recently was named a semi-finalist in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Her painting captured an elderly woman afflicted with dementia. Unlike some artists, Bohannon relishes working in many genres—still life, landscape, figurative. “I paint things that interest me,” she says. What doesn’t interest this Northern California-based painter and sculptor though, is art that comes from a cynical point of view, mocking and tearing apart things she holds dear. For Bohannon, art heals and awakens emotions as well as brings substance to light. She explains with this analogy: “Great artworks can be related to a feast, the meal laid out for you: beauty, thought, emotion, and kinship. It can leave you feeling full or perhaps serve to awaken the appetite further. But it will never leave you empty.” Universal themes are what interest her most, and she looks to many of art history’s great painters, such as Rembrandt and Michelangelo, for inspiration. “I’m not going to paint the inside of my car or my daily sandwich,” she says. “Those things don’t register an emotional blip on my radar screen.” Growing up in Applegate, a small mountain town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, Bohannon says she was a quiet and shy girl. By the time she started thinking about what she wanted to become, she realized that she loved and was good at only two things: writing and visual art. Thus, after high school graduation, she headed for the Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, CA, which seemed like the big city at the time. Since graduating from there, she has returned once again to Applegate, where she shares her life and art with her husband, Julio Reyes, also a talented emerging artist. Bohannon’s studio is in her home, and it’s not unusual for her to spend more than 100 hours there working on a single piece. But her method is strictly spontaneous and embraces variety. For example, when she met an intriguing woman at a wedding in Baltimore last year, she asked her to sit for her. When she saw a horse at an equestrian center, she watched it for hours and then painted the white equine as a symbol of innocence. Although it’s early in her career, Bohannon is self-assured about her career choice. As she writes, “I create because I must create, it is what I was born to do. There’s no other life for me.”

I have received notification that "Dementia" will not be included in the final Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition Exhibition. I can not help but be sad that "Dementia" is not in the show, I thought it would be a wonderful venue for it. Nonetheless, it was great to be a part of it, I am happy for the artists who are in it, and I am going to have plenty of new works to enter into the next competition, year 2012.

Bohannon a Semi-Finalist in the Smithsonian Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition

"Dementia" has been selected for the semifinalist round of the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2009. The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery has chosen "Dementia" as one of the top 100 paintings out of more than 3,300 entries nationwide. They have shipped "Dementia" to Washington D.C. at their own expense for final judging, and will be selecting the final exhibition and winners on May 28, 2009.

All works that are selected on May 28th will be included in the exhibition, which will open at the National Portrait Gallery on October 23, 2009 and remain on view until August 22, 2010.
